October Staff Movie Picks!

Dear Readers,

October is here and as the leaves fall and the days get shorter, we think it's the perfect time snuggle up in front your laptop/tv and indulge in stories. Below, our staff shares a diverse selection of upcoming and all-time favorite films, from fantasy to romance.

We hope we give you a reason to take time for yourself and get lost in a flick this month. Here at GirlSense & NonSense, it's one of our favorite things to do.

Happy autumn to you and yours!

Pamela Picks:

Hocus Pocus

When I think of October movies, the Sanderson sisters immediately come to mind. I can remember first watching Hocus Pocus at age 7 while in the hospital recovering from foot surgery. Since then, it has been a movie that brings me immense comfort and joy. AND the Sanderson sisters aren't done yet! The second film is in the works. Hurray!
"Tis firm. Tis firm as stone!"

Alien movies are kinda my thing (Signs is the fave!) and I love Amy Adams so Arrival is naturally a film I'm looking forward to seeing next month. A spaceship lands on earth and Adams, playing a linguist, is sent inside to attempt to communicate. See it in theaters on November 11th. You know I'll be there!

Emily Picks:

Adapted from Dan Brown’s novel, the movie follows another adventure of Robert Langdon, played by Tom Hanks. This time he is following clues laid out by Dante, a poet who wrote one of my favorite epic poems, Inferno. The movie comes out later this month, and I can’t wait to see how the story plays out on screen!

Lord of the Rings

I rewatch this trilogy at least once a year, usually when the weather starts to get cold and it’s more acceptable to spend 12 straight hours in bed with your laptop. I have the extended, director’s cut editions, and once I get started on the first I have to watch it all the way to the end. I recommend it for sick days when you need some cheering up with epic music and beautiful scenery.

Hailie Picks:

I am extremely excited to see the newest Underworld movie which will be released in January. I have watched all the movies religiously and absolutely love the plot. This movie is supposed to end the series for good so it is bound to be interesting and action packed.

Moulin Rouge

One of my favorite movies is Moulin Rouge which doubles as a musical. This movie tells a love story that happens between a writer and a courtesan. Most of the dialogue is singing so if you like musicals, you will love this movie. I love to curl up on the couch with a blanket and some popcorn and watch this movie during cold nights.

Chloe Picks:

Dirty Dancing

I have many favorites, but one of my favorite movies right now has to be Dirty Dancing. I am very much a lover of old movies and the history that you get to experience when watching them. Plus, how can you not love Patrick Swayze, endless dancing, and great 80s music?

The Help

Another movie love of mine that comes to mind right now is The Help. Though it was made in modern times, I love the history in this movie, the statements it makes, and what it reveals about the truth of that time period, especially as it is based on a true story. It still makes me cry and laugh every time I watch it. It is a fantastically made movie I believe everyone should watch at least once, as well as read the book written by Kathryn Stockett.
