November Inspiration: Daughter's "Youth"

We are the reckless,We are the wild youth
Chasing visions of our futures.
One day we'll reveal the truth
That one will die before he gets there.

And if you're still bleeding,
you're the lucky ones.
'Cause most of our feelings,
they are dead and they are gone.
-Excerpt from Daughter's "Youth"

November's theme of Metamorphoses: Narratives of Change was very much inspired by the fears and awe of growing up. It all seems so inevitable as each year passes and  leaves moments, events, and conversations to be stacked one-by-one until, quite inevitably, a fully-formed structure of being is created. A change occurs. Adulthood.

"Growing up" is supposed to entail wisdom, experience, and maturity as youth is left behind. British-indie band Daughter offers different insights on growing up with their song "Youth". Capturing the elation and invincibility of youth with the lyrics "We are the reckless, we are the wild youth. Chasing visions of our futures" and all the while conveying the vulnerability and naivete of young people and the harsh truths adults must accept in admitting "One day we'll reveal the truth, that one will die before he gets there".

The song also celebrates youth and the beauty of feeling, bleeding, and fully being. Lead singer Elena Tonra delivers anguish and wonder with the lyrics "And if you're still bleeding, you're the lucky ones. 'Cause most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone". Daughter's lyrics speak to the experience of hardening as we grow up and change, lose more, and feel less. Overall, Daughter's "Youth" complicates conceptions of adulthood and speaks to November's theme in addressing the question: 'Who do you want to be?'
